Woods Runner by Gary Paulsen

Woods RunnerPaulsen, G. (2010). Woods Runner. New York: Random House Children's Books.
This novel is a historical fiction novel about the American Revolution. Samuel is a thirteen year old boy who loves to hunt. When he went into the woods, he felt like he did not belong there.  He had heard stories about the men who went into the woods to hunt and simply vanished.  The war comes to Samuel and his family when the British soldiers and the Iroquois savagely attack and take his parents prisoner.  Samuel followed the tracks of his parents and as he walked he found more and more cabins burned to the ground.  Was it the British or was it the Iroquois?  Attacked by the Indians, Samuel was rescued by John Cooper "Coop" .  With the help of Coop, Samuel continued to search for his parents.  He stayed with a family and then began on his search again.  Finally, he found his parents and they tried to get back to Philadelphia.  His parents stayed in Philadelphia and helped the children, but Samuel went back to where he was comfortable- the country.  This would be good to learn about the travesties of the American Revolution.
