Scowler is  dark and  modern realistic fiction.  It is a psychological thriller that has terror and suspense due to a sociopathic husband and father.  Ry and his mother and sister are trying to keep the family farm running since Ry's father went to prison when Ry was nine years old.  One day a meteorite landed on the farm and one landed near the prison which helped his father to escape. He comes back to the farm to teach his family a lesson.  Ry brings his three childhood personalities back to protect him,  his mother, and his sister.  Another harrowing thriller is Black Helicopters by Blythe Woolston.  It is about a teenage girl, a survivalist childhood, and now a bomb strapped to her chest.
